Wow! Wow! Wow!

Thanks to EVERYONE who came out to the 7th Tuesday Dance Party last night at the Burbank Moose Lodge! The Beginning WCS and Beginning/Beyond Basics workshops were full, and when it was time for open dancing DJ James Woo took all that great positive energy created in the classes and poured it right back into music for us to dance to!

We had no less than seven brand-new WCS newbies who took advantage of the great $1 Lesson + Dance offer, so WELCOME! We hope to see you back on the dance floor soon!!

We had a little dance pot-pouri percolating last night - West Coast Swing, Hustle, Nightclub, Salsa, Cha Cha, Waltz - and when it got late toward the end of the night we got a little funky, even throwing in a little free style and line dancing just to keep it fresh. 

Thanks to everyone who came out last night, thanks to DJ James Woo for all the great sounds, thanks to the Burbank Moose Lodge and its wonderful dance floor for the hospitality. 

The next DanceChatter Dance is the Moose on the Loose Country Dance on Friday, September 17th at the Glendale Moose Lodge. Don't forget, this dance is a qualifying event for the Paradise Country Dance Festival's Country 2-Step Challenge so there will be lots of great dancers on hand to dance with (and watch dance!).

Summer Dance Camp: SO MUCH FUN

     I got back from Summer Dance Camp on Sunday and boy, was that a good time! We kicked off the weekend with the traditional DanceChatter.Com Cocktail Party and at one point we had about 50 people crammed into our room. Thank goodness we had a suite courtesy of event director Jay Byam! Special thanks to David Walkup who played the most gracious and charming bartender ever. Why is it when I leave him alone for a few minutes he immediately becomes surrounded by women, LOL??? I took some pictures at the party when I looked at them later I realized that almost all the pictures turned into a version of Where’s Waldo – Teacher Michele Adams, tried, as a joke, to make her way into every picture I took – so in the majority of these pictures she’s showing up in these odd angles, from the side, from the bottom, from the top, anywhere she could get in there, LOL! Speaking of Michele, our Double Diva Hustle Team rocked the house during our performance on Friday night. Little did we know the performance (as well as the entire event) was being streamed live over the internet until we started getting congratulatory texts after the event, otherwise we might have been more nervous, LOL. Saturday day and night was about teaching and judging for me, but after the work part was over it was time to get out there on the dance floor and work it all out. My friends Stacey and Francisco Martinez of Dance Family Studio in Pasadena brought their newly formed kids ballroom performance group to the event to, they did a great routine, a montage of dance styles, VERY well done, VERY cute. Congrats to Jay B for a well-done event, I will see you at the next one!!

Dance Tip For The Week:

Posture, Posture, Posture

     Anyone who has taken my classes on a regular basis has heard me say this: Posture, Posture, Posture. But I mean it! Think of your body as an electrical cord that transmits an electrical current. When we don’t stand up straight we are not an optimal conduit for that current. It’s like an electrical cord that’s been bent in the same place for too long - the current is interrupted, it can no longer travel freely. But stand up straight, pull your spine up and shoulders back and you become a better conduit for transmission. That current can then travel freely through you to your partner and back, especially when BOTH partners have good posture. Better posture leads to a better conduit which leads to better connection which leads to better communication when leading and following which leads to better dancing. And, it just looks better!

Sizzlin’ Salsa Drawing To A Close: Final 2 Weeks 

     Only two more weeks to go in the Sizzlin’ Salsa Summer Nights at the Autry Center! I’m so sad it’s drawing to a close as this year has been an AMAZING two months of music and dancing. Tonight’s band is Perrico Hernandez, a well-known percussionist so lots of energy will be out there on the dance floor. The last and final week will feature one of my personal favorites, Johnny Polanco, which traditionally is the biggest night of the entire season (Johnny knows how to pack them in!). If you haven’t attended one of these nights yet you’d better get your Salsa booty to the Autry, STAT! Dancing under the stars! Beginning Salsa lesson at 7:30 pm with Trish! Taco & Margarita Bar!  What’s not to like?? Autry Museum at Griffith Park (across from LA Zoo), theautry.org, $7 per person (Autry members get in free).

     The monthly DanceChatter Moose On The Loose Country Dance is coming up this Friday, August 20^th at the Burbank Moose Lodge. I’ll be teaching the Line Dance “She’s Country” at 6:30 pm, and since UCWDC Champion David Walkup will be in town that weekend, he’ll be helping me teach the 7:00 pm Country 2-Step Lesson, so look out, guys, you know what that means!! We’ll be putting some craaazzzeee stuff down on the dance floor! DJ James Woo will be taking over the DJ duties from me at 8:00 pm for open dancing, playing a mix of Country 2-Step, Swing (ECS & WCS), Line Dances, Nightclubs, Waltz, Cowboy Cha Cha, etc., so I’ll actually get to play hostess and dance for a change. Seriously, I’m lucky to have James on board for the dance, if you’ve heard him play at my 7^th Tuesday Dance Party (the next of which is Tuesday, August 31^st), you know he excels at playing a wide variety of music for EVERYONE!     As you know, my 7^th Tuesday Dance Party is the dance party break between each and every 6-week class series at the Burbank Moose Lodge. It’s a way to get out there and practice what you’ve learned, bring your non-dancing friends in to be inducted (we have some GREAT specials for dance newbies), and enjoy the DJ talents of DJ James Woo. He played our last 7^th Tuesday party in July and did such an excellent job playing a mix of dance music, I am SO lucky to have him on board! And you don’t have to be a Moose member or even a DanceChatter student to attend! Any and all are welcome! Beginning WCS lesson at 6:15 pm (this is the $1 specially priced class for newbies, see the flyer for more info) and to change things up a bit, a Beg/Int level HUSTLE class at 7:00 pm, after which of course we will turn the dance floor over to you. Don’t forget that first time new students get a $5 discount of their first series price IF they sign up for the series while at the dance.

Sizzlin' Salsa Summer Nights

Record breaking numbers turned out for Son Mayor last night at the Autry Center, I kid you not... as always I'm horrible about guesstimating but there were at least 600 people there soaking up the atmosphere, the music, the cool summer night, the dancing....How great to see so many people coming together with only one thing in common. Who else thinks that dancing can cure the world's ill?? (Trish raises her hand).

I love Salsa dancing and live music but I have to say that Son Mayor is one of the most high energy Salsa bands I have ever had the pleasure of listening to live. FREAKIN' AMAZING!

We had a really fun and entertaining Beginning Salsa class last night, everyone had a great time. The dancing afterwards was fantabulous as always and I was exhausted and elated by the end of the night.

Evenings at the museum are about to get a little hotter!  

The Autry's annual Sizzling Summer Nights outdoor dance party returns to Griffith Park with the scintillating sounds of live mambo, son, Latin jazz, and Afro-Cuban beats.

Wrap-Up: The Day After

I want to thank everyone who came out for the very first 7th Tuesday Dance at the Burbank Moose Lodge last night, Tuesday, February 16th. We had a great time!

We started out the night with a Beginning West Coast Swing Workshop which was free to "true newbies," ie, those who had never taken a WCS class before. The workshop was filled with newcomers and most of those folks took the plunge and signed up for the Beginning WCS 6-week series that starts next week, February 23rd. We are converting... uh, I mean, introducing new people to West Coast Swing, that's what it's all about!!

The Intermediate West Coast Swing Workshop was really fun, too. We had a lot of familiar faces and existing DanceChatter students, but also new-to-me dancers in that group, as well (many of who signed up for the Beyond Basics WCS 6-week series that starts on February 23rd). We had a full floor, a fun and challenging pattern and by the end of the workshop everyone was all warmed up for social dancing. A particular highlight for me was seeing all those dancers actually using the class material they just learned out there on the social dance floor with success - way to go!

DJDK David Koppelman played the best WCS, Hustle, Country 2-Step, Nightclub and Cha Cha music you could possibly hope for, and kept right on playing until there were no more dancers on the floor. His ability to mix the song and dance styles and read the crowd to keep the energy going, keeping everyone happy, is truly a gift. 

Everyone enjoyed the refreshments - we offered a healthy mix of veggies and fruit, and for a touch of decadence, cookies and those delicious "brownie bites".... Mmmmm! Next time though, you all have to promise me that you'll eat ALL the brownies before you leave - it's dangerous for me to take them home!

The Best Dancer Award goes to Chester who’s been a DanceChatter student for almost a year. Before the dance I gave Chester, who doesn’t get out dancing very much, a mission: "While at the dance you need to ask 5 women you don't know to dance (in addition to the women you already know)" This was a real challenge for Chester but by golly if he didn't do it, I could not be more proud of him, way to go Chester!

Special thanks to my volunteers who helped me set up, organize put out the food, work the registration desk and break it all down at the end: Janet, Alice, Gordon, Steve, Dennis, Denise, and Chip. I could not have done it without you. However, I have to give a little extra special shout-out to Alice for her mad skills in working the room - ie, talking to all those new folks, making sure everyone was comfortable and having a good time, and most importantly, getting out there and dancing with everyone! 

Also, special thanks to dance promoter Rhonda Diamond for not only sharing the dance info with her extensive e-mail list but who also made a cameo at the dance as well! Thank you Rhonda, it was a pleasure to have you and Paul in the house! And, folks - make sure you attend Rhonda and DJDK David Koppelman's 4th Saturday dance in Lomita on February 27th, it will be a blast! (www.diamondswing.com). 

I'd also like to thank James Woo from Dance Buddies and USA Dance for his support in publicizing the dance, for taking the time to come and hang out with us. James, we had a wild WCS, it was fun, thank you for joining us!

Thanks also to my Hustle partner in crime, Michele Adams, who although not able to attend (she's waaaaaayy down in Orange County), took the time to support the dance via her e-mail list. Quick aside, Michele and I have a Double Diva Hustle Workshop coming up on Saturday, March 6th at the Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach (www.dancechatter.com). And, did you know? Michele's and my Double Diva Hustle Team will be making its debut performance at the upcoming Los Angeles Premiere Dance Classic (April 9-11th, www.lapdclassic.com). 

And, although I know he usually doesn't like me to acknowledge him, I must also say thank you to Bailey, the administrator at the Burbank Moose Lodge. He always makes it so easy for me to teach and work there, making sure the lights are right, the temperature is correct, the sound is working, etc. His attention to detail really makes a difference. Also thanks to Bailey, the dance floor is FANTASTIC (as was commented on by many people). 

As for me, I had a blast teaching both workshops last night (give me a mic and I'm happy, LOL), I loved meeting all those new people and seeing so many familiar faces as well, and I did my best to dance with as many of you as possible (I haven't lead so much in one night in a while!). 

See you all next week, Tuesday, February 23rd when we resume the regular Tuesday night classes (7:00 pm Beginning WCS, 8:00 pm Beyond Basics WCS, 9:00 pm Beginning Nightclub) with a new 6-week series, and mark down Tuesday, April 6th as the date for our next 7th Tuesday Dance Party!

Paradise Dance Festival + 2009 WCS Club Jack & Jill

     Paradise Dance Festival (Pomona, Oct. 16-19) is just around the corner and I am really looking forward to it. Paradise, helmed by Barb DeLay, Karen Crabtree and Paradise originator JD Dougherty, offers a great mix of Swing, Country and Line Dancing with workshops, dancing and contests in all three areas. I highly recommend.

     This year’s ticket will also include TWO buffet meals with the event pass – that mean two meals you don’t have to bring yourself from home (cold squished sandwich, anyone?) or two over-priced restaurant meals you’d have to buy elsewhere, so that’s a great deal. And, if you do the J&J competing thing, make sure you check out B&K’s J&J club contest with different qualifying rounds around town this month leading up to the finals at the event, and they have some awesome prizes, too! Giant Twister Game @ Paradise: DanceChatter Needs YOU!
     Going to the Paradise Dance Festival next month? Trish Connery & DanceChatter.Com needs volunteers to help create a Giant Twister Game and Booth for the event. Help me design and create the giant mat and spin board for this fun carnival game and work the DanceChatter Giant Twister Booth as part of the event’s Margaritaville Carnival on Saturday, October 17th.  This will be loads of fun, we’ll act as “barkers” to draw people in, run the games, hand out silly/funny prizes.      I am now actively selling tickets for the DanceChatter.Com Group going to Jay Byam’s New Year’s Dance Camp in Palm Springs.

     For those of you who joined the DanceChatter.Com Group at last year’s event, you know what a great time it was – We had 40 people in our group, the cocktail party was incredible, the sit-down dinner was awesome (check out all the beautiful people in our group!), and of course, the weekend was so much fun for everyone.

     Tickets are $185 for a full-event pass including New Year’s Eve dinner and party ($135 for just the event pass, dinner NOT included). Not to brag or anything but my tables will sell out, so if you want to be with Trish and David and the AbFab DanceChatter group at New Year’s, which includes our DanceChatter.Com Cocktail Party and sitting with our group for the big gala dinner, you’d better get your registration in to me ASAP!

Help Find David Gimelfarb
      David Gimelfarb is a 28 year-old grad student from Chicago. Last month he went on vacation to Costa Rica and disappeared on August 11th while hiking at a Costa Rican national park. No one has seen or heard from him since. 

     David's friends and family are reaching out to anyone/everyone to spread the word about this missing American and do everything possible to bring this young man home. There are three areas of focus in this regard: 1) Keep this story in the media spotlight – that means do anything/everything you can to talk about the story, create media events, and keep the story fresh in the public’s mind; 2) Contact your elected representatives, ask that they contact the State Department to bring pressure to bear on the government of Costa Rica to allow the US, specifically the FBI, into the country to help investigate the disappearance. As of right now the US government cannot intercede unless the Costa Rican government requests it. Let’s make them request it. Do you know anyone in Costa Rica who could contact the CR government? Can you write the Costa Rican embassy in the US? 3) Join the Help Find David Gimelfarb group on Facebook to show your support, to donate to the rescue fund, find out how to contact your representatives, and to get updates on what’s going on in the case.

     Do an internet search for David Gimelfarb to see the different news articles about the case. You can also visit the Facebook group created by David’s friends: Find David Gimelfarb, for more details on the story, to find out how to contact your representatives, updates, etc.

     David is the nephew of one of my students, which is how I heard the story. I joined the 'Find David Gimelfarb' group on Facebook, shared the info on my Facebook wall, posted it on Rec.Arts.Dance, wrote my Congressman and Senator, donated to the Rescue Fund, and am trying to think of other ways to get the word out. Any help you can give in getting the word out too would be greatly appreciated.

Last Night For Sizzlin’ Summer Salsa @ Autry Center August 27th

     I am both excited and sad this week. Excited ‘cause this coming Thursday, August 27 one of my favorite-est (which is favorite and then some, LOL) Salsa bands, Johnny Polonco, is playing at the Autry Center’s Sizzlin’ Summer Nights. The sad comes in when I realize that this is the last Salsa night of the summer. We expect anywhere from 700-800 people on this last and final night of this two-month long annual series and the dancing and music should be off the chart hot, hot, hot. I can’t wait to see and dance to Johnny and his band, and at the same time, I don’t want it to end. If you haven’t checked out Salsa at the Autry yet, this is the week to do it, you won’t regret it.

Paradise Dance Festival + 2009 Club Challenge Jack & Jill

     While at Montana’s on Saturday David and I ran into event directors Barb DeLay and Karen Crabtree who helm up the upcoming Paradise Dance Festival (Pomona, Oct. 16-19) as well as  Los Angeles Premier Dance Classic (April 2010, LAX). Paradise is the best of both Swing and Country when it comes to merging their respecti r workshops, dancing and competitive worlds, I highly recommend.

     Barb also told me that this year’s ticket will also include TWO buffet meals with the event pass – that mean two meals you don’t have to bring yourself from home (cold squished sandwich, anyone?) or two over-priced restaurant meals you’d have to buy elsewhere, so that’s a great deal.

     And, if you do the J&J competing thing, make sure you check out B&K’s J&J club contest with different qualifying rounds around town this month and next leading up to the finals at the event, and they have some awesome prizes, too! DanceChatter Newsletter 8-24-09: Part 1

DanceChatter Newsletter; Missing in Action

     I know, I know, it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve sent out an e-mail, I hope y’all forgive me. My schedule has been pretty packed to say the least. As you may know I started Salsa classes at the Burbank Moose Lodge (BML) on Wednesday nights, and the Tuesday night West Coast Swing and Country 2-Step classes, also at the BML, continue to flourish (good word, flourish), and of course WCS & Ballroom Sundays at the Hacienda. Jay Byam’s Summer Dance Camp in Palm Springs at the beginning of August was a hoot, we had over 20 people packed into our hotel room on Friday night of the event for our traditional DanceChatter.Com Cocktail Party. I’m so glad that so many of “my” people came with us and had such a good time. For some it was their first event and they thoroughly enjoyed it as did everyone.

     Over the years I’ve noticed that my focus at conventions has changed somewhat. It used to be that I was the stay-up-late-and-dance ‘til all hours girl. Now it seems that between work and teaching and life, I’m so busy all the time that when I make it out to a convention I lean more toward rest and relaxation or should I say collapse and coma, LOL (once I get my teaching and judging obligations out of the way, that is). I know you wouldn’t think it but sometimes conventions are the only quiet time I seem to have – kind of like going to the movies to take a nap (which I’ve also done, LOL). Is that a good thing? Or just plain sad?? At any rate, whether we were resting or dancing or just hanging out together, Summer Dance Camp was a lot of fun, as always. And, just throwing this out there, speaking of Jay Byam’s events, folks are already asking to be part of the DanceChatter Group for New Year’s Dance Camp, my tables WILL sell out (they always do), so keep that in mind, NYDC is only four months away!

     In other news, my mother, Mary Kathryn, was out for a brief visit a few weeks ago, some of you in the Tuesday and Wednesday night classes at the BML got a chance to meet her. She and her husband Lowell will be joining David and I our CruiseFest Swing Dance Cruise coming up in September (only 28 days away!), can’t wait for that. I had a couple of great weekends down in San Diego but my weekends tend to be really short as I always head back to LA on Sunday in order to teach. Speaking of teaching on Sunday, I want to mention the DanceChatter Performance Class which practices on Sundays. I want to give them a shout-out (David, Elaine, Jon, Diana, Scott, Rochelle, Eric, Susan, Dennis, Denise, Brian, Alice) for being such good troopers. We are putting the final touches on our routine and will be putting it out there on the floor in the not-too-distant future; I am so very proud of them.

      This past Friday night David and I headed out to do some ballroom dancing at the Glendale Moose Lodge. Janet E who attends Tuesday night classes at the BML told me about their regular Friday night dances and we decided to check it out. Beautiful facility, gorgeous floor very nice people and a wide variety of DJ music – Waltz’s, Cha’s, Tango’s, Foxtrot, even a few Hustles, WCS’s and a Country 2-Step thrown in. We were a little too tired to make a late night of it, but it was a perfect blend of dancing and socializing. Thanks, Janet, for passing on the info and for saving us seats, and thanks to the GML and dancers for such a good time!

     Saturday we shirked the dance practice we should have in order to run errands. While on the computer that day I posted something about fixing our Saturday morning coffee on Facebook. The power of social networking sites still takes me by surprise sometimes, ‘cause later that same night when we hit Montana’s in San Dimas for some hot Country 2-Step, at least five people came up to me and said “Hey, how was that coffee?” LOL. Thanks to the awesome dancers who gave me such awesome 2-Steps (David [of course], Ari, Alan C, Woody W, Dean S, Tom H, Chuck), you guys were great!

     Back before I barely dipped my toe in the Salsa pool I had seen the name Christina Haggerty advertised at the Salsa venues but at the time didn’t know who she was. I always remembered the name though because it so closely resembled that of Kris Hagerty who used to partner, teach and dance with WCS’er Sonny Watson. Remember those days? Tuesday nights at the Crest in Reseda, Sunday classes with Sonny and Kris, the SwingShift dance team?

     Swing dancer Kris dropped out of the dance scene long ago but Salsera Christina Haggerty is very much present and over the SoCal Salsa Scene. She’s got agazillion projects going on all at once including Jay Byam’s Salsa Extravaganza (Aug 15-17, Palm Springs) not to mention Salsa and Cha Cha classes all over town.      Ain’t no other place to be this weekend but Jay Byam’s Palm Springs Summer Dance Camp. Word. Sorry, just went Oklahoma Street on y’all but I’m back now.

     Seriously though, Jay’s annual summer event is so much fun, it’s something that everyone should experience at least once and ideally attend every year thereafter.

     David and I are hosting the DanceChatter Cocktail Party on Friday evening August 7th (for  VIP guests, those who bought their SDC tix through me and for DanceChatter.Com Performance Class members). On Saturday, August 8th I have two workshops: a 12:00 noon Beginning Level Romantic Nightclub workshop and a 3:00 pm Beginning Level Hustle workshop, come see me in class! Also, throughout the entire weekend I am once again proud to participate in the event’s Beginner Private Lesson Program (Tell your newbie dance friends about this, it’s a GREAT way for beginning dancers to take advantage of private lessons with select teachers at a discounted price).

     Speaking of beginners, DanceMeister Jay B is the only event director I know of that offers a dedicated Beginner Bootcamp Workshop room all weekend long (every class taught in that room is beginning in level), but also the discounted private lesson program for beginners as well.  It’s a great way to induct your friends and family into the addiction, I mean, joy of dancing!

Hello, everyone!

I am out of town this coming weekend, celebrating the birthday of the very fabulous David Walkup. We have plans for a hot air balloon ride, a limo-driven tour of local Temecula wineries, dinner and dancing, what a great way to celebrate such a special day! 

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, despite my absence THERE WILL BE CLASS ON SUNDAY, JUNE 21ST!

The very capable Mike Kluck will be subbing for all four Sunday classes, EVEN the 5:00 pm American Tango class.

In addition to all of Mike's WCS experience, he's also been taking AND teaching Ballroom at the new You Can Dance Studio in Hermosa Beach (remember that great dance party a few weeks ago?), so you will be in very capable hands (you know I wouldn't leave you with just anyone, LOL). 

Brian P will be working the registration desk as usual so you will see his familiar face. Have a great day and enjoy Mike Kluck!

It is with sadness that I announce Wednesday, May 27th as my last night teaching a weekly class at Family Dance Studio in Pasadena. Earlier this year when I was asked to come on board by owners Francisco and Stacey Martinez I was very excited but we all knew logistics might not work out long-term (plans on paper don't always work out in real life, LOL. After two months of trying to fit the weekly drive into my schedule, it has become clear that it's best to discontinue the classes. Nonetheless, I want to thank Francisco and Stacey for the opportunity, I have nothing but the utmost respect for them and for the staff at Dance Family Studio, and the students are WONDERFUL. And, even though I won't be there on Wednesday nights anymore, I hope to see you all at the West Coast Swing Bootcamp sponsored by DFS this coming
